We are pleased to announce our scholarship recipient for the Saint Petersburg Photo Workshop, edition 2013, is Cassandra Giraldo (USA) with a project about the effects of Hurricane Sandy in Rockaway Beach, New York City. Giraldo’s photo essay is meant to illustrate the sentiment Superstorm Sandy victims had “of being neglected by organizations such as the Red Cross, FEMA, and Homeland Security that were nowhere to be seen in the days following the storm”. Talking about her work Giraldo says:
If not for the volunteers associated with the Occupy Sandy movement, who came, and continue to do so in great numbers, in addition to the good-willed neighbors who came without agenda, the sights and sounds of a devastated beach neighborhood would have appeared far more dystopian than they already were. While not a full documentation of an event that was copiously covered by the media, these images are meant to demonstrate the subtle and quiet moments of desperation that still permeates the “forgotten” peninsula.
Giraldo’s work has been selected for good storyline development and visual coherence.
YarT Photography would like to thank everyone for interest and active participation. We have received a lot of interesting portfolios and the choice was not simple.
